The 2016 Pirelli Calendar Proves It's a Powerful Time for Women
The Pirelli calendar, known for its photographs of nude supermodels posed provocatively for the male gaze, is having an identity makeover. This year, Annie Leibovitz was called in to photograph women of applaudable achievement. The exclusive calendar, which never goes on sale but rather is gifted to 20,000 VIPs, has positioned itself to reflect the current climate of female empowerment that is, thankfully, captivating the media. Subjects include women of different generations, race, and industry. Agenes Gund, the 77-year-old emerita of the Museum of Modern Art, poses with her granddaughter Sadie, a photography major at Brown University. Tavi Gevinson, Serena Williams, Patti Smith, and Amy Schumer are among the celebrated group of strong women. Scroll through for some of our favorite portraits.
