A 32-Year-Old Millionaire and CEO's Best Piece of Business Advice
Alexa von Tobel is only 32 years old, yet already she is a successful CEO, millionaire, and New York Times best-selling author. So, you'll understand if we say we think her advice is worth heeding! Asked to share her best advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, von Tobel revealed that it comes down to one thing: finding great mentors.
Types of mentors may fall under different categories, but for von Tobel, who sold her financial planning company, LearnVest, for more than $250 million in 2015, the most important quality to look for is frankness. "I think what you have to find is one or two or three people that are going to give it to you straight and push you harder. … You have to be comfortable with people telling you that you're not doing well." That way, you can turn it around and make the necessary changes and improvements.
So how does she recommend actually getting in the room with these would-be mentors? Ask for 15 minutes, offer to bring coffee, adapt to their schedules, and keep it short and to-the-point. Go in with three questions, and make them good ones. Once you're in the door, do everything you can to express your passion, vision, and ability to evolve and grow. A truly great mentor may become just as passionate as you are about seeing you and your business succeed.
If you don't know where to begin, you can always start by building a squad of virtual mentors.
