Joanna Gaines’s Deep-Dish Pie Recipe Is the Perfect Holiday Dessert

At this point, it feels safe to assume that everyone in the U.S. is familiar with Joanna Gaines. From her often-duplicated farmhouse aesthetic, to her new line at Target, to the last season of her beloved show—all with help from her equally talented husband Chip Gaines, of course—we all want to sneak some of her sensibilities into our everyday lives. And since Americans also can't resist a slice of pie, it makes sense that Joanna and her team would have just the right recipe to share in time for the holidays.

Featured in the current issue of The Magnolia Journal, aka Joanna's new quarterly print magazine, this recipe for a pear-cranberry deep dish pie is exactly the type of dessert you would expect from the HGTV star. Filled with the seasonal flavors of nutmeg and ginger, and topped with rustic cutouts and coarse sugar, this dessert has the same homespun quality as your favorite renovation reveals. Just make sure to be as meticulous as Joanna and schedule enough baking time in advance of a gathering: It'll take about two hours before you can dig in.

Ingredients:

6 ripe, firm pears; cored and sliced
1 cup frozen cranberries, fresh or thawed
1 tbsp. milk
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
Coarse sugar, for sprinkling on top
Sugared cranberries (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine the granulated sugar, ginger, flour, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Add the cranberries and pears, and toss them gently in the mixture.

On a floured surface, slightly flatten one pastry ball. Roll it into a circle measuring 13 inches in diameter. Next, fold the pastry into quarters; then unfold it into a 9-inch-deep pie plate. Transfer the pear and cranberry mixture in, and cut the edges to match the edge of the plate.

Roll the remaining pastry into a 12-inch circle. Cut a few small shapes from its center and set them aside. Place the pastry circle on the filling, and then trim it a half-inch beyond the edge of the plate. Fold the top pastry under the bottom pastry and crimp the edge if you'd like. Place the cutouts on top, but don't cover the openings.

Sprinkle the pie with coarse sugar, and place the plate on a baking sheet. Bake for 60 to 75 minutes, until the filling is bubbling, and then remove it from the oven to cool. Garnish with sugared cranberries.
