Wait, Are These the Best Doughnuts in Chicago?
For the most part, we eat pretty healthily, with the exception of a doughnut (or six) now and then. Okay, so desserts are a weakness for this editor, but that’s what spin class is for, right? In a city like Chicago—one famed for its culinary scene—it’s no surprise that doughnuts are artisanal. From a fried chicken doughnut sandwich or bacon, egg, and doughnut sandwich—it’s a thing in more than one place—to Firecakes’ ice cream sandwiches in the summer, these are the six best places to get doughnuts in the Windy City, according to Instagram. Also, we’re not sure if you heard, but yesterday was National Doughnut Day. While these social media holidays may be silly, this is one we can get behind because why wouldn’t we celebrate doughnuts? Stan’s Donuts and Coffe
Elizabeth Taylor used to go to the original Stan’s Donuts and Coffee in Los Angeles, which opened more than 50 years ago. There are now six locations in Chicago, and their crème de la crème includes Nutella pocket, peanut butter and banana pocket, and chocolate drizzle pretzel. The shop also has vegan and gluten-less options (the recipe is gluten-free but uses the same oil as the other doughnuts) and shakes topped with mini doughnuts.
With two locations in the city, Firecakes Donuts serves everything from classic jelly to maple-glazed pineapple and bacon and seasonal specialties to the likes of apple cinnamon fritter and Sicilian pistachio old fashioned. Now through the end of summer, it also serves ice cream doughnut sandwiches. Also, four words: Giant Birthday Cake Donut.

Another favorite of Chicagoans, Doughnut Vault's lines go outside the doors of their two locations, which serve classic flavors and specialty doughnuts that change daily. Past specials have included chocolate birthday cake, coffee caramel old fashioned, and apple cider old fashioned with crumble.
