7 Apps That Make Holiday Travel Incredibly Easy
The holidays are hectic enough as it is without adding the stress of travel into the scenario. We’ve been known to forgo family Thanksgivings altogether just to avoid JFK, so we don’t blame you if it all makes you anxious. Luckily, some genius engineers have banded together to make our holiday seasons a cinch (or at least a little breezier) with a handful of smart and beautiful travel apps. Here’s what will be helping us survive.
WHY: Ever procrastinate on booking your travel and realize your flight home is $800? Yikes. We’ve been there. Needless to say, we were so pleased to discover Roomlia, an awesome app that makes booking hotels last minute as easy as the swipe of a finger and as cheap as, well, nothing else we’ve seen. We’re talking five-star hotels for $150/night and affordable inns for $60. Download it now and start planning your next trip!
WHY: So you’ve flown all the way across the country to your perfect winter wonderland. Now what’s for dinner? Elegant new restaurant discovery app Flavour will help you find the best restaurants in whatever city you’ve landed. With recommendations from food critics, local publications, and industry experts, you’ll uncover hidden gems, local haunts, and award-winning eateries. You can even browse by what’s popular, what’s open on Christmas, etc. Download it here.
WHY: Ever gotten through the looong security only to realize you forgot to print your boarding pass? Or arrived at your hotel a day early? Or worse, missed your flight? TripIt keeps track of all of your travel documentation and creates your itinerary so you don’t have to. After signing up, just forward your bookings (hotel, airline, car rental, restaurants) to TripIt and it does the rest. It’ll even give you directions, maps, and weather for each destination. Download it here.
WHY: Find the lowest airfares available using Matrix by ITA Software by Google (the app of which is called OnTheFly). What’s unique about it is that you can view a monthly calendar of lowest fares and explore date ranges rather than just specific days. You can also search by airport code, city, nearby airports, or focus on flights that suit your preferences, such as air miles, specific stopovers, or particular airlines. Since you can’t actually book through the app (which you can through, say, Orbitz or Expedia), you know you’re seeing the fairest fares (no preferential treatment). You can then call the airline to book directly or book on the airline’s site. Download it here.
WHAT: WiFi Finder
WHY: Flight cancelled and you’ve got six hours to kill? Or need to kill time before hotel check-in? Or just need information and can’t get a signal? Boot up WiFi Finder to locate free and paid WiFi hotspots in your area. You can search for public WiFi anywhere in the world, filter results by location, and even call the locations for more info. Download it here.
WHAT: My TSA
WHY: Is toothpaste allowed in my carry-on? How long is the wait at security today? Is my flight delayed? Is this rain going to affect my flight? Where is pre-check? Government-run My TSA answers all these questions and more, so you can leave the speculation out of your planning and be completely prepared for your flight. Download it here.
WHAT: Dude Where’s My Car?
WHY: You’ve finally arrived at your home airport after hours of travel, and all you want to do is get home and unpack all those presents you received. Unfortunately, you find yourself in airport parking lot C8, and your car is nowhere to be found. Instead of wandering around aimlessly in below-zero weather, pull up the aptly named app Dude Where’s My Car, which will give you directions to your car immediately (provided, of course, that you set the location before you left). Download it here.
