7 Risky Design Choices to Make in Your 20s (or Beyond!)
Your 20s are a time for breaking in first apartments, starting new jobs, staying out late, and making bold choices when decorating. As a twenty-something you may not know what exactly your style is just yet, so you need to do some experimenting. How do you really know if you love bright jewel tones, for example, if you don’t live with them for a while? With this said, however, it’s actually never too late to take some chances with your décor. Whether you’re 22 or just “feeling 22” like Ms. Swift, here are some risky decisions to consider.
Your 20s are the perfect time to start an art collection. Much like starting an investment portfolio, taking risks will eventually pay off. Scour flea markets for hidden gems, tour galleries for up-and-comers, and peruse online sources to find pieces that resonate with you.
Rich jewel tones, like burgundy, plum, and emerald, are the kind of colors to embrace when you’re feeling adventurous. You may want a calmer, neutral space when you’re older, so now is the time to paint a ruby red accent wall or upholster your sofa in royal blue fabric.
It’s always a risk to try a DIY. Will it turn out well? Will I like the end result? These are the kinds of questions to throw out the window in your youth. Like a daring new haircut or a camping trip in Death Valley, you never know if it’s a great idea but you’ll be glad you tried it in the end.
Don’t let anyone or anything limit your creativity. If sketchbooks and canvases are constricting your creative expression, then take it to your walls. Just as British artist Shantell Martin demonstrates, there is no better way to show your personality.

As you get older, your eyes may want something restful to gaze on, like a still lake or an all-white bedroom. So when you’re young, stimulate the senses by mixing intriguing prints of all kinds. From kaleidoscope to ikat, leave no pattern behind.
Although swings, lofted beds, and suspended seating are decidedly dashing, they are a young man’s sport. While you still have the stamina to dismount from a hanging rattan chair, try it out in your space. You may be surprised how good a workout getting out of one really is.
