Bored? 5 Creative Spring Activities That Are Also Good for You
Camille Styles, founder of the eponymously named lifestyle blog, has garnered a frenzied fan base over her mindful living habits. Here, she shares her favorite lifestyle tips with MyDomaine.
As we say goodbye (and good riddance!) to winter, my guess is that I’m not the only one who’s got getting healthy on the brain. Here in Austin, another busy SXSW season has just wrapped, and I’ve got to admit the crazy schedule left me feeling like I’ve neglected my workout routine and scarfed down a few too many breakfast tacos. Luckily, this is the season for fresh starts, and the warm days ahead are the perfect opportunity to grab a few gal pals and get moving.
Research shows that those who work out with friends are more likely to stick with their fitness goals and try out new forms of exercise they wouldn’t have done solo. Plus, it’s a helluva lot more fun. And since it’s no secret that our friends can be a major influence (good or bad) on our lifestyle choices, why not rally the troops and pick up some new healthy habits together? Here are six ways to live healthfully this spring with your squad.
Why hit the gym alone when you could be working out and hanging out at the same time? Organize a group workout (maybe a hike outside town or a cardio dance class), then go out for cocktails—the reward at the end will help you power through a sweat session, plus you’ll be able to relish in the knowledge that you earned that margarita.
I love hosting build-your-own parties since they encourage everyone to get creative with their favorite ingredients and adjust for any dietary restrictions. Power bowls are trending for good reason: They’re a really great way to pack tons of veggies, protein, and good-for-you grains into one majorly delish bowl. Skip the brunch lines and call the girls over for a weekend hang. All you have to do is prepare some cooked quinoa, gather the bowls, and select a few healthy toppings, like shredded kale, sautéed tofu, and roasted sweet potatoes.
My most kick-butt workouts happen when I have a familiar face around for encouragement (and a little healthy competition). There are all kinds of workout moves where two is better than one. For some ideas, try following FitGirlVideos Instagram account, and if you and your bestie are inspired to give it a try, here are some of my favorite exercises to bookmark.
Like the power bowls, spring rolls are a great way to share a meal together. You can find rice paper wrappers at most grocery stores, and then it’s just a matter of piling on the toppings and rolling them up like an extremely healthy burrito. Even better? You can pack in a rainbow of great-for-you ingredients that’ll turn your next girls’ night into a superfood feast.
My favorite way to start the day is sipping on a refreshing, nutrient-packed smoothie. Since a few of my friends and I love to swap smoothie recipes, I’m thinking it’s time to hold a face-off. Power up the blender, have everyone bring their own ingredients (enough to share with the group!), then sip and cast your votes. You’ll walk away with an arsenal of breakfast ideas to get you through spring.
