Designer Crush: Catherine Kwong
Featured in the pages of Architectural Digest, Town & Country, and House Beautiful, San Francisco-based interior designer Catherine Kwong is celebrated by the design glossies we love for her contemporary, glamorous aesthetic. Her dream-closet design for the 2012 San Francisco Decorator Showcase, inspired by top fashion blogger Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific, also took the Internet by storm -- the envy of every fashion girl around. After graduating from Brown University and Parsons School of Design, Kwong began her career designing luxury interiors for Studio Sofield and flagship stores for Ralph Lauren. After many years of learning from design legends Bill Sofield, Paul Vincent Wiseman, and Ralph Lauren, she launched her own design firm, Catherine Kwong Design, in 2011, specializing in high-end residential and hospitality projects with an emphasis of modern architecture and custom detailing. A fresh approach to elegant, tailored interiors; mixing modern with vintage; and pairing high art with personal treasures. She's also drawn to details like hand-painted wallpaper, cast glass, vintage door hardware, and luxe fabrics. Her glamorous, yet unfussy aesthetic, light and bright spaces, metallic materials, and restrained use of color. Kwong recently wrapped a home in San Francisco's posh Pacific Heights neighborhood inspired by the world of fashion, with influences from Lanvin and Valentino in one-of-a-kind pieces and custom Rubelli drapery reminiscent of Erdem's F/W 12 collection. She also recently designed the home of beauty entrepreneur with statement-making pieces like a vintage Gio Ponti cabinet, a Jean Prouvé-inspired brass and lacquered parchment media cabinet, a Paavo Tynell chandelier, and vintage brass and velvet cantilevered dining chairs. "Last Fall, I went to Japan for the first time," Kwong says. "I was expecting it to be amazing, and in fact it was even more than that. The Japanese approach to all things aesthetic, as well as the devotion to handmade details, was truly inspiring."
