From actors and singers to a politician, these famous faces are obviously talented, but did you know they are all also painters? Read on to see how the most artistic of Hollywood and Washington’s elite spend their free time.
A talented actor capable of a range of artistic expression, Depp has been painting figures, specifically faces, for some time. “What I love to do is paint people’s faces, y’know,” Depp told Vanity Fair. “Because you want to find that emotion, see what’s going on behind their eyes.” Depp has painted a multitude of figures from ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis to musician Keith Richards and actor Marlon Brando.

Action star and former 007, Brosnan has a softer, much more expressive side than he conveys in his films. Painting since a young age, Brosnan has developed quite a portfolio of work for which he credits Picasso, Matisse, and Kandinsky as inspiration. “I always wanted to be an artist, a painter,” Brosnan says on his website. “I started as a Trainee Artist in a small studio in South London.” An environmentalist and philanthropist, Bronson donates the sales of his giclee prints to the Brosnan Trust to distribute to his chosen charities.

Another action star with a surprisingly gentle hobby, Stallone has amassed a collection of original works, which were recently on display at the Galerie Gmurzynska in Switzerland. The show included over 30 pieces, from self-portraits to abstract works, created by the actor.

A man of many talents, Franco never shies away from picking up a new hobby or skill. It should come as no surprise that the hunky, albeit occasionally bizarre, actor is also a painter. Not without controversy, Franco has faced harsh criticism from the art world yet continues to share his original works with his audience via large-scale public installations and social media.
Not only an accomplished actress with major roles in Charlie’s Angels and the CBS hit Elementary, Liu is also a trained artist who has been working on her craft for decades. While she started painting in 1993, Liu attended the New York Studio School from 2004 to 2006 where she studied drawing, painting, and sculpting. Previously working under the pseudonym Yu Ling, Liu most recently exhibited her work under her own name at London’s Salon Vert gallery and has published a volume of 72 ink and acrylic works entitled Seventy Two.

Legendary musician McCartney’s talents extend beyond the recording studio into the painting studio, where he’s been creating original works for decades. Back in 2000, McCartney published of book of his collection entitled Paintings, which included over 200 mainly abstract works. “What I find is that I do it when I am inspired,” the musician says in the book. “And that's how I can combine it with music. Some days the inspiration is a musical one and other days it has just got to be painting."

Following his exit from office, America’s 43rd president picked up oil painting as a hobby and quickly found much success and satisfaction in his work. Earlier this year, the former world leader displayed a large collection of his oil-on-board work including the above self portrait at a show at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas. “I love to paint,” the former president told Diane Sawyer. “Painting has changed my life in an unbelievably positive way.”
