From Clooney to Prince William, the Sweetest Celebrity Proposals
Despite the fame, fortune, riches, and glamour, we sometimes forget that our favorite celebrity couples are people too and, just like us, propose to their significant others in the sweetest and most thoughtful ways. From simple proposals at home at Christmastime to elaborate schemes taking place in helicopters and private jets (okay, so maybe they’re not just like us), the below celebrity stories had us feeling the love.
The actor recalled his proposal while on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show. When Matthew McConaughey proposed to the mother of his children, Camila Alves, he made sure to incorporate it into an existing family tradition. He explained the whole adorable sequence of events to Leno. "During Christmastime we go around as a family, and everyone gets their turn to open presents. I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep so she'd have to keep opening boxes to get to it,” said McConaughey. “Because we go around and swap out and take turns on who's opening presents, she had to get skipped the last 15 times. She kept going, 'Why can't I open that present?' And I said, 'You have to wait till the end.' Finally I get to her and I'm calling my family over … and her eyes go wide, and I take a knee and I said, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'"
When the Apprentice winner proposed to the E! News anchor, he really pulled out all the stops. Rancic arranged for a limo to meet DePandi at the airport in Chicago and bring her to a helipad where we was waiting with pizza and champagne. Once the duo was flying high over Rancic’s hometown in a helicopter, he popped the question!
In a sweet and personalized gesture in their San Fernando Valley home, actor and artist Brady Smith gave actress Tiffani Thiessen a hand-illustrated book detailing their relationship and, at the conclusion, asked her to be his wife.
Through the couple’s creative save-the-date video, which they sent to their wedding guests, we’re able to actually watch this thoughtful proposal. Bringing in his sons and nephew to help and referencing Union’s middle name, Monique, Wade asked the boys to hold up “Nickie will you marry us?” signs while he was waiting on bended knee.
In other private-plane proposal news, according to reports, NFL quarterback Tom Brady proposed to supermodel Gisele Bündchen on Christmas Eve in 2008 while they were aboard a private jet. Naturally, the plane was prepared with champagne and, according to TMZ, four dozen white roses.
While appearing on The View, John Krasinski told the co-hosts that his proposal came as a complete and unexpected surprise. "We were alone, and she didn't know that I was going to do it," Krasinski said. "She just turned around to ask me a question, and I was on one knee."
After asking President George W. Bush for permission first, Henry Hager, a former White House aide, set to working on planning a proposal for the president’s daughter Jenna while the two were on vacation in Maine. Hager woke Bush at 4 a.m. for an unwelcome sunrise hike up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. "I did not want to go hiking," Jenna Bush told the Associated Press. "It was freezing. But we got up, and we hiked in the dark for an hour and a half, and then when we got towards the top, with the sunrise, he asked me!”
While visiting O’Connell’s hometown in New York, the actor took the model to see the apartment where he grew up and spent his childhood. It was in that meaningful, personal place where he asked her to marry him.
Having dated (on and off) for nine years after meeting while at University of St. Andrews, the future king of England and Kate Middleton were engaged while on vacation in Africa. The pair embarked on a 10-day trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya to celebrate Prince William’s completion of a search-and-rescue helicopter course. The icing on the (future wedding) cake? William proposed with his late mother’s stunning sapphire-and-diamond ring.
On the street corner where they met, Burtka proposed to Harris. "We were on our way to an event at an Indian casino 45 minutes out of town in a limousine, and David wanted to stop for some reason that I didn’t quite get," Harris told Out Magazine. "I thought he wanted to get some booze or something. And then he got on one knee and proposed." One year later on Valentine’s Day, Harris proposed to Burtka in Santa Monica.
