Celebrities React to Trump's Transgender Ban (and Restore Our Faith in Humanity)
Yesterday, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to propose a U.S. military ban on transgender soldiers. Despite the fact that an estimated 12,800 transgender military personnel currently fight for our country, Trump cites "the tremendous medical costs" and "disruption" associated with transgender soldiers" as reasons for their dismissal.
According to a report published in The New England Journal of Medicine, service members pay an average of $29,929 per year to support their transgender peers, a figure that includes the cost of hormones, therapy, and surgeries. In other words, each service member pays roughly $2.62 per year to assist their trans colleagues—a sum that the researchers deemed "negligible."
Statistics aside, the ban is a blatant case of discrimination against transgender people, and has, unsurprisingly, received backlash. Scroll down to see how Hollywood, in particular, has reacted to the new ban.
THIS is America. WE the people. ALL THE PEOPLE. Today I stand with our fellow citizens. No human being is a burden. I believe in equality. In freedom. In opportunity. In kindness, acceptance, and fairness. I believe in this country, so I, and many others, sign the petition linked in the bio. Please join..????????????????????????

We should be grateful to the people who wish to serve, not turn our backs on them. Banning transgender people is hurtful, baseless and wrong— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) July 26, 2017
I have met many transgender Americans over the years who have served or are currently serving our country in the military. I have heard from them humiliating stories of being misgendered and experiencing various kinds of mistreatment when they are willing to put their lives on the line in ways many of us would never do including our current President. This latest reversal of another Obama administration policy continues to send the message to trans Americans that our lives, our safety and service are less valuable and unwanted in this country, the country I love and hold so dear. Let’s all come together and send the message to trans Americans that despite what this president and administration proclaims that trans lives, safety and service are valuable, that they matter.” #TransRightsAreHumanRights #ProtectTransTroops #TransIsBeautiful

Banning transgender people from serving our country is simply wrong. We should be so grateful to anybody who wants to serve!— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) July 26, 2017
