This Is How Compatible You and Your Partner Are, According to Astrology

Astrological compatibility is often discussed in very rigid, black-and-white terms: A Virgo isn’t compatible with a Gemini, a Gemini can only get along with a Leo, and so on and so forth. This is why we found this recent analysis from MindBodyGreen so refreshing; instead of positioning certain signs against one another, it operates under the assumption that any two zodiac signs can find love together. According to MBG’s astrology “class instructors,” the AstroTwins, “It’s all about understanding the unique energies between your signs, which is determined by the distance between them.” Without further adieu, here are the seven major romantic compatibility matches written in the stars:

Same Sign: Twin Temperaments

Dating someone with the same sign as yours indicates that you’ve come to terms with all of your flaws and learned to wholeheartedly love yourself in spite of them. While you may have a kindred spirit to enjoy life with, the AstroTwins warn that “passion may cool to a brother-sister vibe” if you don’t make an effort to spice things up.

Celebrity couple: Sarah Jessica Parker (Aries) and Matthew Broderick (Aries)

One Sign Apart: Semi-Sextile

Dating a sign on either side of yours can give rise to a tumultuous love/hate relationship, even leading to a sort of teacher-student dynamic. “Of course, all that friction can lead to explosive sexual chemistry,” write the AstroTwins. But it can also make for “painful breakups and a seething sexual tension that lingers for a lifetime.”

Celebrity couple: David Beckham (Taurus) and Victoria Beckham (Aries)

Two Signs Apart: Sextile

Dating someone who lives two zodiac signs away makes for an easygoing relationship rooted in friendship. “You’ll often have similar values and attitudes about politics, raising a family, and which movies to rent,” explains MBG. The challenge for this couple lies in keeping that sexual spark alive and getting out of “buddy mode.”

Celebrity couple: Blake Lively (Virgo) and Ryan Reynolds (Scorpio)

Three Signs Apart: Square

The square aspect is a “harsh, 90-degree angle between two signs that creates a push-pull dynamic,” according to the AstroTwins. While this somewhat volatile dynamic doesn’t exactly make for the most laid-back relationship, your partner will often keep you “active and keyed up.” Enter the Power Couple.

Celebrity couple: Beyoncé (Virgo) and Jay Z (Sagittarius)

Four Signs Apart: Trine

Rooted in the same element, you and your trine partner share an unspeakable bond, one that makes you feel as if you don’t have to constantly explain yourself to them. Connected at a core level, you feel unbelievably comfortable with this person—to the point where a little mystery is needed to keep the passion alive.

Celebrity couple: Kim Kardashian West (Libra) and Kanye West (Gemini)

Five Signs Apart: Quincunx

Termed the “original odd couple,” these two signs have absolutely nothing in common with each other astrologically. You’ll feel as if this person is either your soul mate or “the devil incarnate,” leading to a bond that is intense in an almost secretive way. But “if you’ve both done the requisite self-awareness work, you can make a formidable team when you pool your strengths,” write the AstroTwins.

Celebrity couple: Michelle Obama (Capricorn) and Barack Obama (Leo)

Opposite Signs

While the name would connote the exact, well, opposite, signs opposite each other on the zodiac wheel can actually have a lot in common. While each partner has a distinct role in the relationship, life with an opposite sign can feel full, “like a finished painting,” writes MBG. “You’re challenged to grow as a person and take responsibility for your part of the relationship.”

Celebrity couple: Angelina Jolie (Gemini) and Brad Pitt (Sagittarius)
