Designer Crush: Cuffhome
As fans of bold interiors and artistic spaces, it’s only natural that we would delight in the dramatic, yet comfortable environments designed by Cuffhome. With an expert's ability to combine sculptural items, textural contrasts, and saturated color, Cuffhome lead designer Wendy Schwartz and her team create statement rooms that are surprisingly inviting and accessible. The firm also designs an artisanal furniture and lighting line, and offers a curated selection of art and wallcoverings that reflects their artistic vision. Thanks to a childhood spent scouring flea markets and antique shops with her mother, Wendy Schwartz was always design-minded. After being hired by a friend to design her home, she pursued a full-time career in interior design. Schwartz then partnered with Kristi Bender—a one-time client who brought years of branding and marketing experience to the table—and Cuffhome was born. With offices in Santa Barbara, Calif. and Brooklyn, N.Y., the design firm is keeping busy with projects across the country.
Combining the eye of a designer with the creativity of an artist, Schwartz and Bender translated the established aesthetic of their interior design firm into a line of handcrafted lighting and furniture and launched an online shop, which has been featured everywhere from House Beautiful to Lonny.
Schwartz defines her personal aesthetic as artful, sculptural, and casual, and prefers to create spaces that feel “undecorated” rather than polished—as if they’ve evolved over time. The designer also places an emphasis on organic elements and artistic details. “I love natural materials, like woods, metals, Belgian linens, and leathers,” she says. “I’m passionate about ceramics, especially those with sculptural and geometric shapes.”
Cuffhome’s bold, fearless choices are what set them apart from the pack. Though their designs are fully livable, the use of fashion-forward materials, colors, and combinations makes them feel modern and bespoke. Perfectly in-sync with their interiors, the firm’s product line reflects their penchant for translating artistic lines and sculptural ideas into items fit for daily living.
Schwartz stays inspired by continuing her fine arts education in ceramics, sculpture, and painting. “I wish I had more time for all!” She exclaims.
Thanks to their locations across the country, the firm is busy with a variety of projects, including the complete renovation of a 1920s Spanish home. New product introductions to their furniture line also keep the team on their toes.
“We’re always inspired by our clients and then of course art, fashion, visionaries, new restaurants and hotels, nature, travel, and online research!” Schwartz tells us.
