Putting Up Holiday Decorations Early Makes You Happier, Studies Find
There's no universal rule about the right time to decorate your home for the holidays, but it's a topic that ignites social media feeds every year. According to Reddit, November is too early to buy a tree and decorate your home with string lights, but if you're among the group who can't wait to celebrate, science is on your side.
In a Daily Mail story, Steve McKeown, psychoanalyst and founder of MindFixers, says that people who decorate their home early are likely trying to relive happy experiences and that doing so has a host of benefits, including connecting with your inner child. "In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate with things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood," he explains. "Decorations are an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement."
Previous research also shows that people who decorate their homes during the holidays are perceived as more likable and involved in the community. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that participants rated decorated houses as more "friendly and cohesive." The bottom line: It's time to get out the string lights.
