Looking to the home’s many skylights and vast windows, the designers played off the surrounding greenery and colors of the ocean for the color scheme. “We like to bring the exterior colors inside, and the windows are a main feature of this home, so this played heavily in our design,” they say. To balance the home’s many white walls, the designers incorporated a lot of black elements, too. “We try to keep it minimal and not mix too many colors. We usually pick one or two colors over the neutral colors, blacks and whites.”

To bring interest and life to their restrained palette, DISC relied on heavy mixes of textures and materials. “We wanted to go a bit more masculine in the overall feeling by bringing in lots of textures and a little more color than what we normally have done,” Shrock says. “We made all the upholstery, which allowed us to use a variety of textiles to enhance the layered, textured approach.”

Speaking to their clients’ “hippie yet refined” style, the designers used multiple vintage rugs with striped and patchwork designs, and sprinklings of prints throughout. “We like textured linens, a few patterns, velvet, and leather to be in every room,” Shrock says of her secret formula. The pattern pièce-de-résistance is a pair of drapes in Kelly Wearstler Channels Fabric. Joined by a set of Knoll dining chairs in an abstract watercolor print and a glass bulb chandelier, the room's vibe is fittingly oceanic.

The biggest challenge of the project, Dick and Shrock tell us, was working with the large bookcase that runs the entire length of the main living room (the wall to the left of this fireplace). With several recessed shelves, the modern feature is oddly shaped, yet striking—you want to get it right. “We ended up using grass cloth behind all the nooks and adding a lot of texture through pottery, books, and accessories,” Shrock says.

The bookcase with a built-in fireplace could easily determine the focal point of the room, but the designers chose to face the sofa out to focus the view on the outside of of the house, and have the other seating face the room. “It makes for more conversation and opens the area up to the kitchen, when the client is entertaining,” Shrock says. For a landscape designer (the wife of the family) and an avid cook (the husband), this furniture plan strikes a perfect balance.
