3 Easy Updates for Your Kitchen
Give your culinary space an upgrade (without a renovation) using the below ideas from our editor-at-large, designer Estee Stanley.
If you’re feeling blah about your kitchen, but you’re also overwhelmed with the thought of a renovation, don’t fret. You can totally transform your kitchen with a few clever, affordable, and easy tweaks—no remodeling required!
Looking for a high-impact change in a dull or tired kitchen? It’s simple: Redo the paint on your cabinetry. Choose a color depending on how much light enters the kitchen. Consider antique whites and ivory when your space seems dark and closed-in, and moodier grays and blues if you’re fortunate to have plenty of light. (Editor’s note: Personally, I like a painted kitchen when the application is done professionally, but you can DIY.)
To achieve a more dramatic look, use charcoal and deep grays, and add contrast with brass hardware. If your cabinets are in good condition, but their color leaves much to be desired, leave them bare and consider a dramatic wood stain to enhance what already exists.
Hardware is jewelry for the kitchen, and one of the easiest and most cost-effective changes to change a drab kitchen into something special and refined. Antique bronze finishes are on-trend while remaining classic and chic. If you want to add a fun element to your space, try incorporating hardware with color or different materials such as glass or Lucite.
Accent lighting can add a new dimension to your kitchen and turn it from a solely practical space into the decorative hub of your home. Try vintage-style pendants for a more eclectic feel, or if you prefer a more tailored, refined look, a shaded pendant would work perfectly.
