The 5 Most Expensive U.S. Cities to Own a Dog

Dana Covit

We know, we know. The puppy in the window is irresistible. But having a dog, in addition to being a huge responsibility, can weight heavy on your wallet, too! A new study from real estate company Redfin, who teamed up with pet insurance company Trupanion and dog sitting service Rover, explores just how much canine care costs across the U.S.

Taking into account the cost of a dog-friendly rental, the average cost of doggie healthcare, and the cost of pet sitting and daycare services in 116 US cities, Redfin determined which cities were the most, and least, expensive for dog owners. To absolutely no one's surprise, San Francisco will cost you the most, with rents jumping 14% and dog sitting services running at a premium in the populated city. See which other cities ranked below.

  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Fort Lauderdale, FL
  3. Aurora, CO
  4. Portland, OR
  5. Chula Vista, CA
