8 Must-See Shows Premiering This Fall
Editor’s note: We turned to TV expert Rachel Stern, production assistant for Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, to give us the scoop on what’s new (Scream Queens and Blindspot tie for the most-anticipated shows), what’s coming back with a bang, and which guest stars to be on the lookout for. Read on for her ultimate fall TV guide, and set your DVRs now.
I’ve watched the Blindspot trailer a few times now, and I’m still confused! However, that being said, it looks extremely entertaining and suspenseful. The show centers around Jane Doe, a woman found in a bag in Times Square with no memory and tons of mysterious tattoos all over her body. The FBI gets involved and follows the map of tattoos to help solve a larger scheme of crimes. A similar plot with tattoos and clues was tried before on The Whispers, a show I was not a fan of. Let’s just hope there aren’t aliens involved in this new show! Blindspot premieres Monday, September 21, on NBC.
I think one of the most anticipated shows of the fall TV season is writer Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens. Basically anything Murphy puts on the air (Glee, Nip/Tuck) is bound to be a success. You’ve got veteran Murphy actors like Lea Michele and Emma Roberts alongside huge music stars like Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas, and Murphy even recruited horror legend Jamie Lee Curtis to join the cast. This show is for sure going to be the breakout new show of the season. Scream Queens starts Tuesday, September 22, on Fox.
The Affair is probably one of my favorite new shows from last year. It has drama, suspense, and everything you could possibly want in a nighttime soap. What I liked about this show is the audience viewed the same story twice but from the eyes of two different people. The first half of the episode was in the eyes of Allison, and the second half was in the eyes of Noah. It was extremely interesting to see how people view the same situations differently. The new season adds two more perspectives. In addition to Allison and Noah, we will also see Cole’s and Helen’s points of view. To my knowledge, no show has been done like this before, and it is definitely one that should be watched. The Affair returns Sunday, October 4, on Showtime.
One of the most talked-about new shows of last season was, without a doubt, Empire. It’s grown such a massive audience in the short time it’s been on the air. I would say it’s one of the most successful new shows from last year. It was a hit from the get-go, and it was renewed after only being on the air for two weeks. Empire returns Wednesday, September 23, on Fox.
Even though American Horror Story is an anthology-style series with a new premise each season, I still consider it a “veteran” show. The thing I love most about American Horror Story is the excitement and anticipation during its hiatus. Ryan Murphy loves to tease his audience, and he’s certainly been doing a good job at that. Every so often, he announces a new character or releases a new promo to excite the show's fans, and this new story is going to be absolutely amazing. Even though we have the absence of Jessica Lange, I have no doubt Lady Gaga, along with the rest of the amazing cast, will provide another thrilling installment to the franchise. American Horror Story: Hotel premieres Wednesday, October 2, on FX.
When I think of Glee, I think of fun and music. “The new Glee,” in my opinion, is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. This is probably one of the lesser-known new pilots of the fall 2015 season. It tells the story of a crazy girl living in New York City who moves to West Covina, California, in pursuit of her college ex-boyfriend—from 10 years ago. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a musical comedy. I know what you’re thinking: This premise sounds ridiculous. However, so did Jane the Virgin, and look how successful that turned out to be. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premieres Monday, October 19, on The CW.

How could you not pick How to Get Away With Murder for the queen of crime? Viola Davis IS the queen of crime. I’m extremely excited that this show is coming back, because Davis messed with our emotions when she said she would only do one season of the show. However, once the series started and the fanbase grew, I knew she wasn’t going anywhere. The biggest looming mystery from last season is who killed Rebecca?! I can’t wait to find out who the culprit is and see what other cases Annalise Keating and her team are involved in. How to Get Away With Murder returns Thursday, September 24, on ABC.
When I first watched the new trailers for fall 2014, I thought, "There is no way this show is going to last. What a dumb premise." I think that was the general consensus among critics, as well. But boy, was everyone wrong—this show has been the best surprise. Gina Rodriguez is certainly the breakout star of Jane the Virgin, but the show made us fall in love with all of its characters. And every episode I watched made me want to watch more. The finale left off with Jane giving birth to Mateo and Sin Rostro subsequently kidnapping him! This over-the-top telenovela-like show is just what The CW needed, and its return is highly anticipated. Jane the Virgin returns Monday, October 12, on The CW.
