Behind the Scenes of Gray Malin’s Latest Adventure
When photographer Gray Malin asked if we would be interested in sharing his St. Moritz travel diary along with the inspiration behind his latest photography series, our resounding answer was: Yes! Malin traveled to the glamorous Swiss destination to capture the Snow Polo World Cup from vantage points both on the ground and above—he took to high-flying helicopters for his signature aerial shots. Keep scrolling to read—in Malin’s own words—about the inspiration for his Snow Polo series, must-visit spots in St. Moritz, and what it’s like to rub fur-covered shoulders with the European elite.
Flew into Zurich, then hopped aboard the Glacier Express, which is approximately a three-hour train ride through a majestic route of beautiful snow-covered terrain for the final destination of St. Moritz. Even from the train, the snowflakes looked so individual and defined.
To celebrate (and wait for my friend from London to join), I ordered us a couple glasses of Champagne, perused the St. Moritz magazine, and generally enjoyed the people-watching. Based off the many overheard accents, it was a very globally diverse crowd.
First of all, if someone didn't tell you, you would never know that the polo match is happening on an actual frozen lake. The polo field was quite large and I was running all around it snapping images.
Much like at the hotel, everyone at the event was super-friendly! They also were very well-dressed for the cold, with lots and lots of fur. This included their dogs, too, which were everywhere!
I had the opportunity to go up to the official announcer's booth, which was a fantastic point of view! Walking the grounds, we enjoyed Perrier-Jouët champagne and snapping shots with the event sponsor, Cartier.
The weather was not always ideal for going up in the helicopter ride, so I ended up going up four different times throughout the course of the trip.
The guys from Helibernina AG were so helpful in making sure I got up—and with enough time to achieve my shots.
Out of all of the times I've been up in a helicopter over snowy mountains, this was by far the coldest I have ever been!
However, when I returned home and began to edit through all of the many images I shot, I could not have been more thrilled with the outcome.
