3 Grab-and-Go Snacks That Will Actually Heal Your Gut

Kelsey Clark

Nothing can poke holes in your healthy diet quite like eating on the go. Whether you're shuffling between meetings or jet-setting across the country, there's something about being out of your element that lures you to the nearest bag of Doritos. Worst of all, these processed snacks could be your gut's kryptonite due to the refined grains and added sugars. Rather than compromising your gut health in a moment of weakness, look to MindBodyGreen food editor Liz Moody's list of gut-healthy grab-and-go snacks. Read up on a few of her favorites below:

Spicy Maple Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Considering that so much of our anxiety lives in our guts (butterflies, anyone?), magnesium-packed pumpkin seeds are a powerful stress reliever. "Keeping your magnesium levels high will help soothe your nervous system and, as a result, your gut," explains Moody. If packaged pumpkin seeds aren't your thing, she recommends coating them in maple syrup, sea salt, and cayenne before toasting them in the oven at 350°F.

Celery + Almond Butter

An elementary school favorite, celery stuffed with almond butter contains prebiotics, which provide "the food the good bacteria in your gut need to proliferate," she explains. Top yours with chopped nuts, cinnamon, and sea salt for added flavor and simply pack in a sandwich bag for later.

Turmeric Muffins

While these take a bit of prep time, turmeric muffins are packed with one of the most anti-inflammatory ingredients on earth. "I love to make a stash of these on Sunday and eat them throughout the week when I don't have time to eat breakfast, or I just need a quick pick-me-up to get through the afternoon," explains Moody. Check out her favorite recipe.
