Inside Harley Viera-Newton's Hip SoHo Apartment
When New York DJ and lady-about-town Harley Viera-Newton isn’t spinning at the city’s hippest venues and giving us major style envy on Instagram, she’s unwinding in her artful SoHo rental with her DJ boyfriend Ross One and their feline companions, Tarzan and Marmite. “A lot of our time is spent at the desk working,” she says, “and otherwise we’re on the sofa with the cats or in bed watching TV on the projector.”
Creating their low-key home was a collaborative process. “This is the first time my boyfriend and I have lived together, so the goal was to sort of figure out the balance of how our personal things mixed,” she says. “We each brought our own touches, but we ran everything by each other, and it was such a team effort.”
Quite apparent, Newton certainly has an eye for vintage, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s always on the go, uncovering unique finds as she hops from hip town to hip town. “I’m definitely a vintage fanatic, so most of my closet is vintage,” she admits, “and I collect antiques as I travel.” Surprisingly, her favorite pieces aren’t from a buzzy New York store, but Montana. “I go there every summer, and they have massive antique malls you could spend hours in,” she says. She has also taken a liking to Portobello Market in London and the Chelsea Flea Market in Manhattan, where she scored her round bedroom mirror.
Despite all the unique pieces the pair have brought together, Newton’s favorite is more utilitarian. “This might be boring but the West Elm coat rack has been so useful—especially now in the winter months when big coats take up so much space,” she replies, “I love the way it looks and the wheels are so convenient. (Sadly, it’s no longer in stock.)
Sharing a space with your better half always presents some aesthetic and spacial challenges, but with two DJs in the house, this pair had another hurdle to jump: records. “One of the greatest challenges moving in was narrowing down the records,” Newton says. “Ross’ collection is so extensive.” The IKEA Expedit bookcase (rest in peace) comes in handy storing all those well-loved album jackets.
As for what’s currently on rotation? “I have a Jackson Browne record that is very special to me that I play at home a lot,” Newton says.
For a style setter like Newton, this home is not without a few nods to venerable fashion houses: an Hermes blanket here, an Eames hang-it-all dripping in Chanel there.
The DJ's favorite thing about her home "is the way the light pours in through the windows in the living room. It makes the home feel so airy," she says. It's a wonder why she ever leaves. Oh wait. She's got somewhere chic to be.
