Having a Moment: Painterly Glass
Forgive the material snobbery, but there's glass, and then there's Murano glass. It's the latter that has recently captured our imagination--with its swirling designs rendered in Monet-worthy light-catching brushstrokes, a single handcrafted piece can turn a table setting into something decidedly banquet-worthy. Christie's' latest online-only 20th Century Italian Glass sale, for which bidding begins today, is the ultimate case-in-point, featuring a jaw-dropping 61-lot array of Venetian glass spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, with an emphasis on midcentury tableware by such legendary artisan names as Venini, Barovier & Toso, and Seguso. And while the auction house is known for the sort of big-ticket items that attract the personal-island-owner demographic (see: Jackson Pollock's Number 19, which garnered a cool $58.3 million at their Post-War and Contemporary Art Auction), this sale is considerably more approachable--perfect for new collectors looking to splurge on a modern heirloom. Shop our favorite pieces below, from the psychedelic-infused 1960s Graffito Ambrato Vase by Ercole Barovier, to a Veronese vase with an exquisitely delicate balloon silhouette by Vittorio Zecchin.
