The Hottest New Health Food Trends, According to Google
Watching the meteoric rise of matcha in the marketplace and in conversation practically everywhere we got to thinking... what other foods will be the next big thing? And is kale over? How about quinoa? If you want hard data on what's trending in the world or in the country, Google Trends doesn't lie. Plugging the most talked-about health foods we know into the engine, we discovered that a number of much-buzzed super foods are currently at their peak of interest worldwide. Other "trends," as it turns out, were a figment—apparently sorghum has been popular for, like, all of eternity. Scroll below to find out which health foods Google says are oh-so hot right now.
Açaí palm, the Brazilian palm tree, and its antioxidant-rich, fiber-rich, and heart-healthy fruit the açaí berry, peaked in interest in January 2009—likely when açaí products like juices were introduce to the U.S. and other countries—but it has been in slow decline since. However, the term açaí bowl—which refers to a healthy morning dish made with açaí puree, bananas, berries, granola, and coconut—began to peak in August 2013 and hit an all-time high this month.
The aforementioned matcha, or matcha tea as some call it, began to peak in January 2014, and peaked in April 2015. It seems everyone is talking about this ancient samurai drink, which is packed with anti-oxidants and said to boost metabolism, burn calories, detoxify, and enhance your mood. The Irish Independent “called it” with a story titled, “The Next Big Thing? A Look at Matcha Tea,” which was published in 2013.
The buzz about turmeric, a bright orange spice from South and Southeast Asia, has been slowly climbing since around 2012 and is currently at a height, but it’s forecasted to peak in the next few months. It is said to fight heart attacks, delay diabetes, fight cancer, curb joint pain, provide skin benefits, and even protect the brain.
You may think that coconut oil is oh-so March 2012 (when it first peaked), but the tropical product—the benefits of which include stress relief, cholesterol maintenance, weight loss, proper digestion, and relief from a number of diseases—actually peaked again in March 2014, and again in April 2015, and is only projected to grow in interest and hype.
Vegan cheese, i.e. a non-dairy cheese alternative that’s made from nuts or other plant foods, has been on the rise since 2011, but it first peaked in April 2012, right around when an NPR story titled, “Cracking The Code: Making Vegan Cheese Taste Cheesier,” was published. It reached height interest in January 2015, and is forecasted to remain buzzy through next year.
Apple cider vinegar began a succession of sharp peaks in interest in May 2013, which reached an all-time high in January 2015. It remains much-talked about and should continue to grow in interest. It is a potent antimicrobial, may lower blood sugar levels, can aid with weight loss, can lower cholesterol, and may protect against cancer.
Much like açaí bowls, but made with pureed pitaya (dragonfruit), pitaya bowls are a completely new health food trend, first appearing as recently as March 2013 and peaking in June 2015. Pitaya is said to aid digestion, strengthen the immune system, and increase energy. They’re also rich in antioxidants, fiber, magnesium, and Vitamin B.
Bone broth is another recent breakaway star, which came to a dramatic peak in January 2015. It helps cure gut issues (food intolerances, constipation, etc.), protects joints, produces collagen, aids sleep and improves memory, boosts the immune system, and increases energy.
