Home Tour: A Masculine Modern Home in Los Angeles
The next time we want to create a sophisticated, masculine space, we know who we're going to call: Heather Heron. The L.A.-based interior designer's most recent project is nothing short of stunning, from the layered, modern living areas to the outdoor entertaining spaces laced with breathtaking ocean views. The term "penthouse" might sound fancy, but this home proves that life on the top floor can be both elevated and casual. The open layout, outfitted in shades of warm neutrals, exudes a simplicity that is quietly bold.
At the end of the day, it is no surprise that the Heather Heron aesthetic was a perfect fit for this project. “A sophisticated space by the ocean," muses Heron. "Right up our alley.”

Working with a neutral palette, Heron built interest by playing textural art, rugs, textiles, and ceramics off sleek marble and polished wood surfaces. “Playing with tones within the same palette and creating subtle details are my favorite ways of creating dimension," says Heron. The result is a look that's textural and layered, with warm grays and browns creating a balance of earthy and modern moments.
The space balances chic and comfortable design, drawing upon a mixture of polished and more well-loved elements with statement pieces that evoke an inspired, expressive, and worldly vibe. “Natural, handcrafted and vintage elements create a relaxed, lived-in energy that brings a humility to some the more slick highly designed pieces,” philosophizes Heron.
Customization played a key role in the final result, as Heron's studio focuses on a holistic design experience that extends from interiors to product and even apparel. “We are able to design and manufacture furniture, fixtures, textiles in-house and to collaborate with artists to create very unique and specialized spaces,” she explains. Heron's attention to custom detailing is apparent in the unique custom pieces sprinkled throughout the home, from the cement fire pit on the patio to the graphic headboard in the bedroom to the hand-stitched leather cover for the dining table.
Heron’s favorite part of the design? The floor-to-sky dining room bookshelves, one of the more playful and colorful corners of the home. Spanning the entire height of the dining room wall up to the skylight, the shelves and their contents are a mixture of reading material and found decorative objects, including some open books that double as photographic artwork.
The total space remains versatile while being completely personalized for the owner’s interests, combining a love of games with a sea view that's meant to be shared. “We designed and made an outdoor shuffleboard table that doubles for a large outdoor dining table with ocean views,” says Heron.
Equally important to furnishing the space was utilizing the abundantly bright natural light and, of course, the view. With her team designing custom window coverings, “we were able to create an experience of stunning ocean views by day and full black out at night,” notes Heron.
The indoor/outdoor shower is sheer perfection, with a modern and cultured spirit. In the interior, the high-contrast bathroom is smart and sleek, with graphic walls and sharp lines softened by the rounded shape of the mirror. The exterior has a more worldly vibe that feels connected to nature, with earth tones and a gentle Buddha statue creating a calming scene. “You feel very protected and womb-like in there with a view of the ocean," remarks Heron of the outdoor shower. "In contrast, the indoor shower creates a feeling of expansiveness and stimulation.”

Ultimately, we love the sum total of Heron's choices in the space, striking a unique balance of calm and expressive moments that add up to an understated appeal. “I am inspired by creating spaces that allow us to experience a lovely balance of both rest and stimulation,” says Heron. “Creating environments that are attuned to our spirits and nervous systems through lighting, acoustics, color, texture, light, and plants to create this internal harmony and expression… That is what excites me.”
