Before and After: Hillary Kerr's #BOSS Office Transformation
We've been busy with a design project of our own here at the Domaine headquarters, making over the office of our co-founder, Hillary Kerr. The project was a blast to complete -- and now we get to enjoy it each day. One essential task was to find a place for Kerr's expansive collections of books, paperwork, and beauty products. Not only did we move offices while she was attending New York Fashion Week (not exactly ideal timing), but her new office also didn't have any storage. "The combination was disastrous, to put it mildly," she says. So in the first order of business, we brought in a white étagère from West Elm, which holds Kerr's expansive book collection and also acts as a room divider. "I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to fashion photography books," she says. Meanwhile, an elegant antique armoire offered enclosed storage for less aesthetically pleasing odds and ends.

"The biggest problem in my former office was a lack of seating," Kerr says. "I had a single chair and one ottoman, which looked lovely, but just wasn't practical." To create more opportunities for collaborative meetings in her office, we reappropriated a loveseat from her fellow co-founder's office, creating a cozy and intimate new seating area. "It's so much easier coming up with ideas when I can really sit down with people, away from my desk," she says. "Ideas are everything in my line of work, and now I have a place to brainstorm with our brilliant team."

Kerr wanted her new office to feel like an extension of herself: "a little vintage, kinda quirky, and decidedly cheerful." Naturally, accessories and artwork were essential. So we created a black and white gallery wall with Kerr's key touchstones of inspiration -- namely silver screen bombshells like Brigitte Bardot, anything with a '60s rock 'n' roll vibe, fashion icons from the '90s, and Helmut Newton photography. "These references are kind of all over the place, but when done in black and white, they feel much more united," she says. "Plus, it's dramatic, which I love."

A few accents, like patterned throw pillows from Arianna Belle and Stone Textile and a pink Mulberry gnome statue (which we gave a little more edge by covering it in silver tape), answered Kerr's call for the cheerful and quirky. "I love a hint of subversiveness, even in office décor, but most importantly I like amusing things," she says. "Life is too short not to enjoy the humor in things."

Life is also too short not to unwind every once in a while, so we rolled a Serena & Lily bar cart into the office for Kerr, a habitual entertainer. "I love the idea of having a quick end-of-the-day or celebratory drink in my office," she says. When she gushed that the re-design was "much more sophisticated and grown-up" than her last office, we felt we'd done our job . . . and then we poured a celebratory glass of bubbly.
