How to Look and Feel Healthier in 24 Hours (Dieting Not Included)

For better or for worse, the Internet has conditioned us to expect instant gratification in all areas of life—even health and wellness. And while it's physically impossible to transform your mind and body overnight, there are small but effective ways to inject an added dose of health into your usual 24-hour routine. Case in point: This recent list from Redbook, which identifies common, practical ways to up your health game in only one day. 

The one golden rule to live by is to pump iron, and then eat iron. "A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories of a pound of fat," says Richard Cotton, the chief exercise physiologist at My Exercise Plan, about the benefits of lifting weights. Weight training also gives your metabolism an added boost for up to two hours after exercising, increasing the number of calories you burn when in "rest mode," i.e., working a desk job.

But you cannot reap all of these benefits without a proper post-workout diet, which brings me to the "eat iron" part. "If you don't have enough of this important mineral, your body can't get enough oxygen to your cells, which slows down your metabolism," explains Samatha Heller, a registered dietitian and a nutritionist at the New York University Medical Center. Consider taking a multivitamin, or filling up on iron-rich foods, such as lean red meat, chicken, fortified cereal, and soy nuts.
