Forget Kombucha—Switchel Is the Next Big Health Trend
Just as we've mastered the art of making kombucha cocktails and matcha popcorn, it seems there's a new health trend on our Instagram feed. The tonic is called switchel, and while it's been around for decades, the wellness concoction is undergoing a social media resurgence and has everyone from The Coveteur to Bon Appetit singing its praises.
While it only contains a handful of common ingredients, switchel is said to be packed with health benefits. Ginger is believed to be a natural reducer of inflammation and is great for digestion, while apple cider vinegar contains potassium-rich electrolytes, making it a healthier alternative to energy drinks like Gatorade. Translation: This is what you should drink after a big night out.
The best bit? You probably already own the ingredients to make switchel yourself. Follow these steps to try it at home:
Step One: Slice a 1.5" piece of fresh ginger.
Step Two: Pour four cups of water and 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into a pitcher. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice and the fresh ginger.
Step Three: Add three tablespoons of maple syrup, a natural sweetener, and chill.
Cheers! Serve your homemade switchel in a Moscow Mule mug ($24) and garnish with a slice of lemon.
