Ask Estee: Where Should I Splurge and Save When Redecorating?

_promo Q: Where should I splurge and where should I save when redecorating? It is very important to set a budget when it comes to decorating a space. However, once you get started, staying within said budget is a whole different story. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, while staying true to your spending limits, the best advice I can give someone is to splurge and save on a sliding scale, only invest in classic pieces you truly love, and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Rule of Three: For every "splurge" item make sure you "save" on about three other items. I have always believed in spending more money on great investment pieces that will make the most dramatic impact on a room. Whether that's a beautiful sofa, statement coffee table, or gorgeous rug, put your money where it matters. Spending large portions of your budget on these sorts of items will give you a change that is not only visibly pleasing, but will also last for years to come. Ignore Trends: Try to avoid trends or fads when choosing your splurges. It's important that they can last as you continue to change or update the space in the coming years. Save on throw pillows, blankets, and accessories, as they are easily updated and switched out yearly or even seasonally while your larger items are there to stay. Get Creative: If you still need a change but have little money left to spend, consider sprucing up some of your current pieces or giving some Craigslist or flea market finds new life with polish, paint, or stain. By purchasing pieces that need a little TLC and making the improvements yourself, you'll be able to incorporate personalized items in your exact color scheme or design style at a fraction of the cost of buying similar pieces brand new.
