A Reiki Master Shows Us How to Properly Sage a Room
Chatting up reiki master Jenni Finley about which décor items should be in our bedrooms got us thinking. What is the proper way to sage a room? Wasn’t there something about getting the corners? We turned back to the energy worker for answers. Saging on the regular can break up negative vibes in your home, setting the reset button for free-flowing happiness. Turns out this is legit. “Pay attention to the way the room makes you feel. Notice places in your room that generate emotion. For example, if there is any part of the room that makes you feel sad, anxious, or uncomfortable, that area likely has stagnant energy that needs to move,” says Finley. Just as dust accumulates in the far reaches of your room, corners tend to collect extra energy. “Think of it as emotional cobwebs. There are a few things that clear energy. Sound clears energy, movement moves energy. The corners of a space can become very stagnant and forgotten about. It’s the same with energy. The corners are a good place to start.”
“Feeling like the room is clear is an intuitive thing. You want to go based on your feeling and personal comfort. It’s helpful when you are clairvoyant or clairaudient. I will hear ‘clear’ and move on. You don’t have to have that ability to sage effectively. You just want to experience that feeling of release after you’ve saged.” Trust your instincts and let your conscious be your guide.
“This is not vital, but I prefer it. Moving in circles is a ritualistic movement. I prefer counterclockwise.”
“Anything that holds special significance should be cleared,” says Finley. She recommends saging jewelry once a week, particularly stones. “If you are wearing jewelry and your emotional state is not where you want it to be, you should take your jewelry off and sage it. You can sage with it on, but it is far more effective for it to be completely off to clear. Diamonds especially need to be saged. Wedding rings are something people wear daily and rarely clear. Diamonds are a very happy stone. They will amplify happy emotion. That said, they are amplifiers, so it’s like putting a mic up to whatever your emotional experience is. While they tend to amplify happy feelings, as opposed to opals, which are naturally predisposed to amplify sad emotions, they will still ramp up drama if you’re going through something. You want to be cognizant of what kinds of stones you are wearing. The first thing I ask myself when experiencing heavy emotions is, ‘Did I clear my rings?’”
Your comings and goings are leaving a trail. “When you leave a space, say moving out of a house, it is very important to take all of your energy with you. What most people do is gather all their belongings, but they don’t gather their energy. One thing that’s useful is to sage the house with the intention of drawing your energy out with you. This way you actually emotionally and spiritually leave your last residence and you will not remain energetically corded to it. When you enter a new space, you want to sage it completely, and ask any energy that is not yours to leave as well.”
“If you have trouble sleeping at night or feel as though you can’t turn your brain off, it could be that your physical and emotional body is processing everything that is in your auric field for the day. By that, I mean you’re still moving through emotions that you may have experienced or things you attached yourself to energetically throughout your day. Saging yourself before you get to sleep can be a really great way to enter your dream cycle free and clear.”
“Anything that is your personal space that you are wearing or around everyday needs a refresh. In my experience, a lot of people who have insomnia are so attached before they go to bed that they can’t release the energy. Saging your bed is effective. Saging your workspace. You want to hit the reset button.”
“If you are going through a particularly emotional time, it’s a good time to take off diamonds,” says Finley. “Anything crystal in your space will accumulate energy like a little generator. You want to sage your stones. If you have them expressly programmed to do something or hold a specific thought, they will hold the energy for up to a few days to maybe a week. You should be saging and reprogramming them regularly,” says Finley. To sage a crystal, hold the stone up and hold the sage underneath it. It’s best if the smoke can run around it. When you feel like it is clear, move on.”
“In terms of clearing effectively, you want to be using pure sage. It is the most effective. Often, you will find sage wrapped with lavender or eucalyptus. If you are simply burning it as incense, the added fragrance is great. If your intention is to clear a sacred space, you need pure sage. My favorite is California white. The leaves are bigger, it lasts longer, and I prefer the smell to other varieties.”
“If you like shopping antiques or collecting vintage or if you’ve acquired possessions, especially wooden furniture, that belonged to someone else, sage it before you bring it into your personal space. You may even need to sage it a few times before it feels like the old energy is released. If you have something of your ex-partner’s that you don’t want to throw out, but it reminds you of them, oftentimes saging it can really bring it back to neutral. There was a time when it wasn’t theirs.” This is great news for that vinyl collection your ex is never getting back.
