In the Mood: Prism Vision
Not content with restricting herself to one specialty, self-professed "multidisciplinary art director" Anna Karlin works across all mediums; from digital and print to interiors to set and furniture design. "I don't understand why designers don't want to design all sorts of things," says Karlin, who founded her eponymous New York-based studio in 2010, complete with a fine objects line, which recently introduced nickel and steel finishes of her trademark brass Chess Stools. Since she's the mistress of so many mediums, we were curious to find out what's inspiring the designer now. Considering her predilection for all things monochromatic, the answer was surprising: pigment.
AHA MOMENT The catalyst for her palette refresh was a kaleidoscopic-themed commission by upmarket Russian department store Tsvetnoy, who enlisted Karlin to set design their spring 2013 campaign, as well as an in-store installation.
THE CROSSOVER "It stuck with me," she says of the research for the project, which resulted in a lingering infatuation with Swiss artist duo Kueng Caputo's sand mortar mixture stools. "It's about finding color in a non-controlled way," she explains.
DO TRY THIS AT HOME So how can you get this amorphous rainbow vibe at home? We found a slew of pigmented pieces that are perfect for those of you who love neutrals, but feel like your space is in need of a visual pep talk. For example, Kim Sybert's ombre linen napkins will turn the drabbest of tablescapes into an on-trend summery scheme--no flower centerpiece required. And a trio of strategically placed electric yellow vessels along the lines of Cyan Design's Moonbeam Vases can transform an empty shelf into a gallery-worthy installation. But that's not all: check out all of our on-trend finds below!
