Instagram... the Surprisingly Awesome Resource for Career Advice
While we love a good newsletter, sometimes our inbox can feel a little overwhelming. And despite deleting them daily (en masse), unsubscribing from our favorite bulletins seems a little too final; what if we miss something? Well, stress no more, because we have the perfect alternative: Instagram. No longer just a visual feast of style, travel, and food, the popular social site is also an impressive career resource. Scroll down to discover a few of our favorites for business tips, inspirational quotes, and life advice to enhance your career.
@heragenda: Instead of talking about the gender pay gap and the lack of women at the top, Her Agenda founder Rhonesha Byng decided to do something about it. The “information and inspiration hub for millennial women” is bridging the gap between ambition and achievement by connecting and empowering women with opportunities and information. The Her Agenda Instagram is filled with inspiring female founders, networking events, and quotes to help fuel your career growth. One of the entrepreneurial talents they featured recently is Jennifer Kapahi (pictured above) who just launched her own beauty brand, trèStiQue; a “mess-free makeup system” for the modern women on the go. She had this sage advice: "You have to have passion with what you’re doing," she said. "The second you lose interest in it, you won’t have the passion to push forward. Know what you’re passionate about." You can also follow Her Agenda on Snapchat using the same handle.
@entrepreneur: Since 1973, Entrepreneur Magazine has been inspiring creative people to launch their ideas into successful careers. They celebrate the drive and spirit of entrepreneurs with in-depth profiles on the next big things and rising talent to watch. That’s why we love the magazine's Instagram, featuring exposés on emerging business stars such as Emily Weiss of popular beauty website Into the Gloss. A recent post reveals how 30-year-old Weiss secured $10.4 million in venture capital to start her skincare line, Glossier. Now that’s inspiring. This truly is a must-follow for all start-ups.
The Fast Company Instagram feed is not what you’d expect. In amongst the latest developments in technology, leadership, design and business, it’s actually incredibly pretty. They make a typically banal subject matter really beautiful, and their 80K followers clearly agree with us. We love how they pair these impressive visuals with inspiring quote captions. Our favorite post was a captivating image by Benedict Evans of best-selling author and Daring Way founder, Brené Brown with a caption that read; “The best comeback stories always focus on heroes getting back on their feet instead of the hours they lie awake at night obsessing over what went wrong. But according to Daring Way founder and CEO @brenebrown, leaders can only emerge better, faster, and stronger by embracing their failures. "That messy middle is where leaders are born," she says.” Inspiring stuff.
@LevoLeague: More than just another networking site, Levo features articles with career advice, resources and guides to enhance your skill level, connects like-minded people with their live feed, and lists job opportunities. It’s like Facebook for careers. There’s even a mentors tab where successful women share their stories to help you make an impact in your career. Their Instagram account is a curated mix of inspirational quotes; #MyPowerOutfit posts where successful women share their office attire and why; and #MentorPowerHour interactive polls. They even have Facebook Q&As hosted by leaders and influencers who answer career-related questions live.
@createcultivate: If you’re an aspiring female entrepreneur in the digital space, then you’ll love Create & Cultivate. This popular online platform is actually a successful creative conference with inspiring women like P.S - I made this and Garance Doré as guest speakers at past events. Their Instagram is a continuation of these inspiring panels brimming with creative females and innovative entrepreneurs breaking the mold. “Too many people psych themselves out of whatever they’re looking to pursue. I say go, and do.” Jaclyn Johnson via Create & Cultivate.
@LinkedIn: Most of you already know about LinkedIn as an incredible resource for connecting professionals online, but did you know the site is on Instagram, too? Just like the site's blog, the LinkedIn Insta also offers great career advice with key tips to boost your profile, mentor profiles, motivational videos, and fun GIFs to keep things interesting.
@Bossbabe.inc: We love a girl boss, so you can imagine our delight when we stumbled upon #bossbabe.inc. According to the organization's Instagram bio, it’s “the fastest growing network of badass, fearless, millennial business women on the internet,” and with 139,000 followers, we tend to believe them. The unique networking business is “like Netflix for girl bosses.” Brooklyn-based CEO and founder of #Bossbabe Inc. Alexandra Wolf has been building her digital empire since she could use a mouse at 2 years of age. At just 8, her dad bought her a webcam, and she starting developed her tech talent and passion for innovative marketing. Follow @bossbabe.inc for inspirational quotes aimed at the modern businesswoman.
@thebrandgals: If you love beautiful imagery with the best advice, then seek out the The Brand Gals. Their Instagram is visually pleasing imagery fused with motivational quotes put together by founder Kelsey Borlan Lee, such as "Jealousy is one of those things in life that the only way around it, is to go intentionally through it. The key to getting through jealousy is to choose in each moment to focus not on what you don’t have (generally the thing that the other person is boasting about), but to focus instead on all of the things you DO have.” And Lee knows what she’s talking about. She just launched the Snap Workshop to educate today’s entrepreneurs with photography skills for business success on Instagram. They teach you how to make stunning visuals like the one above.
@leaninorg: Inspired by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s book of the same title, Lean In is a fun feminist account that showcases inspiring women today and throughout history making major career moves. One of their posts features Jennifer Dewalt, who took the phrase "learning by doing" literally, teaching herself to code by building 180 websites in 180 days. Now that’s motivation!
@businessinsider: This invaluable Instagram resource is more than just career tips, it’s “what you need to know.” We love their fun graphics with tips on how to become a confident speaker, when to use credit instead of debit, and short videos with the colleges that best prepare their students for success after graduation. And if you need a break from career advice, they pepper fun visual posts in between like how to make a Moscow mule or mint julep, essential reading right?
@CareerContessa: An Instagram career list wouldn’t be complete without Career Contessa. The popular site shares honest conversations with real women about work and life; challenging the “juggle” and the “perfectly Pinterest-curated” ideals society sets for our modern lives. Their Instagram reflects this with powerful quotes from industry leaders and everyday entrepreneurial women about business success and life advice such as this one from Rashida Jones; “If your happiness depends on snagging the one perfect job, you’ll never actually achieve it.”
