9 Home Styling Tips We Learned From Instagram
Considering the amount of time we spend on Instagram—it's like a time warp once you get started—it's little wonder the app serves as a huge inspiration point for many creatives. With the quality of smartphone cameras and the array of photography apps, Instagram photos are always impeccably edited. We love a daily scroll through the feeds of our favorite designers, home stylists, interior bloggers, and photographers, and artistic abodes from international magazines. So we compiled a few of our favorites along with some styling lessons we learned with each double tap. Scroll down for our top picks and styling tips.
Sometimes a vanity can get a little out of control, am I right? Especially in the morning rush as I get ready for work. But having a messy vanity means I can never find what I need when I need it. Besides, all those beautiful and—let's face it—expensive perfumes, hand creams, and candles deserve a pretty place to rest. That's why we were swooning over this genius, glam look from Kelly Wearstler's Instagram; she just never seems to put a design foot wrong.
Styling Tip: Once you've found the perfect tray to suit your vanity, be sure to create a chic mix of your everyday essentials—perfume, hand cream, and jewelry—with a few deluxe items—designer candle, perfume oils, and vintage hand mirror. Place a vase of your favorite flowers in among them to finish the look.
There's something so incredibly chic about gold décor. And it seems many of our favorite interior designers have been decorating with the Midas touch too. We couldn't help but double-tap this Parisian-style living room from Australian stylist Steve Cordony. The famed designer ditched his monochromatic signature for a regal pied-à-terre look that would be right at home in the French capital.
Styling Tip: Add a gold glint to any space with a shiny metallic side table, lamp, or coffee table. A yellow-gold rug like the one in this shot is also a subtler way to add the bright tone to your room.
The bedside lamp is a classic design look we all know and love, but we've changed our tune after seeing this stunning yet simple wall sconce style from We Are Triibe's Instagram. It adds a unique visual interest to boudoir style, and we are loving the subtle industrial vibe.
Styling Tip: Since this is your bedroom, we recommend choosing a wall sconce that isn't too overbearing. It should be a subtle addition so you maintain that stripped back, sleep style. Who needs that kind of distraction at bedtime anyway?
Why do offices stick to a monochrome scheme? When your role requires you to be creative, working in black and white or neutrals can limit your mind's potential. That's why we are going gaga for this colorful and happy workplace vibe. This is how you host a work meeting. It's not too loud either, but it's amazing the difference a few subtle hues can make to your mood.
Styling Tip: For those who aren't used to working in color, break out of the black-and-white mold with some interesting artwork. There are plenty of original abstract pieces on Chairish and Saatchi Art that are also really affordable.
If you are someone who loves monochrome, it's OK—we do too—but sometimes it can get a little cold and drab without any color at all. That's where the warmth of wood comes in handy. It's an instant thermal injection and our favorite way to create a comfortable space you'll want to dwell in.
Styling Tip: Take the time to find the right wood grain and tone for your home. Sometimes a deeper oak will suit, while other times a lighter pine will do. You can even mix the styles too; just play around and have fun.
We love a midcentury-modern look just as much as the next design devotee, but if you want to bring personality to any space, then vintage is your go-to. This sweet vintage trike brings a touch of sentiment to this beautiful dining room. Such a sweet addition to a lonely corner.
Styling Tip: Choose vintage pieces that mean something to you. The nostalgia will be lost and empty if you don't have a reason or history with the piece. This bike looks like it was a family heirloom or reminds the owners of a childhood past.
With more time spent indoors working instead of playing, we are all craving nature. So it makes sense to bring an element of the outdoors in through our interior choices. This dining room replaced the usual chairs with rustic tree stump stools that make you feel like you're sitting around a campfire—an incredibly chic one, of course.
Styling Tip: You don't have to make such a drastic change to bring nature into your home. We love a rattan rug for immediate texture, twigs in a vase picked fresh from your garden, or some fruit in a petrified wood bowl on the table.
We love accent pillows; they just add an instant refresh to any space, without costing you a ton. Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors coined the "pillow party" on her Instagram recently, and we couldn't love that concept more. Just the thought of our sofa and pillows having a ball while we're out of the house is super fun.
Styling Tip: Choose pillows with varying patterns but within the same color spectrum so they don't clash. But really just have fun with this.
So you've just finished moving everything around and you're finally in your happy place with the overall look. But then you notice a bare corner of the room that needs a little something, but it's too small for a chair and too big for a decorative object. A plant is the perfect filler for lonely corners, and they add instant life to any space with their greenery and bright foliage. The fiddle-leaf fig is a classic, but there are plenty of other plant varieties to suit your style too.
Styling Tip: Make sure you choose a plant that isn't going to grow too tall for your space, and something that fits your lifestyle too. The last thing you want is a sad and lonely plant with yellow leaves when guests come over—not a good look.
