Kelly Wearstler’s 5 Tips for Decorating Your Home Like a Designer
As a designer, my job is to be a great listener and to encourage my clients to take risks every day. From finding the perfect shade of malachite green paint to experimenting with large-scale prints, my favorite tools are a free-spirited sense of expression and a curious soul. Here is my advice for curating any space like a pro.
Draw from a spectrum of eras and movements in design. Mixing old and new, vintage and contemporary, and a range of influences will create a vibe that is well-traveled. Cultured furniture and accessories rich in history add distinction and poetry to any space. Give a room some soul! There is no substitute for impeccable quality. Invest in key pieces. Important design and handcrafted details go a long way, cultivating an air of sophistication and thoughtfulness.
Living without color is like living without love. Explore colors you feel the best wearing day to day. If your closet is full of blues and greens, those shades will feel equally inviting in your living room. A pop of vibrant hue makes for an easy refresh in any space, even in small doses. Artful accent pillows, a new piece of art, or a bold-colored throw will bring a fresh voice to the existing dialogue.
Color outside the lines. Unexpected choices give a space spirit and edge. Be brave. Choose one or two statement making pieces, from dramatic wall coverings to a key piece of furniture, and then ground your space in quieter, more restrained details. Too many starlets in one room creates needless drama. Bigger voices call for nuanced, organic pieces to balance the overall aesthetic.
A space should tell a story. Seek out pieces that mean something to you personally, whether it’s a special souvenir found traveling on an amazing vacation, or photograph of a favorite musician. No detail is too small. Elevated, thoughtful and everyday items like bar accessories punctuate a space with passion. My love of metal never dies. In a range of patinas, copper, silver, gold, and bronze, mixed metals adapt to any color palette and feel modern yet soulful.
A clever juxtaposition of richly textured materials will add dimension. Intermix smooth leathers with heavier textured jacquards. Pay attention to the hand of materials. From rich woods to marble, an eclectic palette of fabrics, patterns, and organic pieces grants a space movement and depth.
