11 Ageless Décor Items For Your Child's Room
Mother of two and interior designer Dee Murphy of Murphy Deesign shares her expert advice for shopping for your child’s room.
I absolutely adore vintage pieces for styling out a child’s space. The number-one reason? They translate from toddler to teen and everything in between! Meanwhile, the overtly themed spaces of yore — we’re talking to you, princess and pirate décor — won’t see the span of a decade before you and your little one are completely over it. Just take a late-night scroll through Pinterest, and you’ll see that transitional pieces have been the status quo, and what’s trending at every age are timeless pieces.
To that end, I’m bringing you some of my favorite finds that will go from baby to beyond and back again.
Karrie Kaneda Mountain Stripes Mini Blanket ($80)
A blogger favorite (Emily Henderson’s über-chic baby boy Charlie has one), the happy habitat mini blankets are classy, cozy ,and made from recycled cotton — the trifecta of cool. Take it from the crib to the couch to the wall (as a hanging). I promise you: you will never tire of its bold colors and gorgeous geometric patterns.
The Land of Nod Campaign Dresser ($699)
Nothing says timeless like a campaign dresser — just look at all of the "IKEA-hacking” going on trying to reproduce this look! If you don’t have time for DIY design, The Land Of Nod has gone ahead and created this gorgeous version in kelly green and white. It’s perfect for your little princess or knight, without any kitschy undertones.
Lulu DK Love Fabric in Blueberry (inquire for price)
Artist Lulu de Kwiatkowski’s children’s fabric line for Schumacher is whimsical and fun, yet still sophisticated. I love the graphic nature of her “Love” pattern in Blueberry, which would be gorgeous as a wall covering, curtain, or upholstered on a chair or bench. Love is eternal. Enough said.
Serena & Lily Round Belly Baskets ($98)
Serena & Lily storage baskets have made the celebrity nursery rounds — and for good reason. No matter how many times I've seen them, I never tire of them. When they’re finished storing toys, use them to stylishly store absolutely anything else you or your child, tween, or teen desires!
Restoration Hardware Baby & Child Bellina Twin Daybed ($1499)
With it’s classic French curves and carvings, any mama might envy the child with this sweet place to slumber. Has your baby girl graduated? Update the linens with some fab new fabrics (I’m thinking of something with a bohemian vibe), and claim this spot as your own when visiting her in college.
Lulu & Georgia 2'x3' Sheepskin Rug ($40)
The ultimate multitasker, this small sheepskin rug can start off on your newborn's floor as a cozy place to play and explore soft, furry textures, and then make it's way to just about any other spot in the room. Draped it over a bench, a footstool, or a desk chair...this sheepskin will outlast any trend your teen will try to convince you of!
