Exclusive: Kris Jenner Cooks Us a Family Dinner at Home
Manager, producer, entrepreneur—Kris Jenner wears many hats, but perhaps her favorite is that of cook. “I figured out really quickly that the kitchen was going to be the hub of the house and that’s where all the love was,” she told us as we chatted about her new book, In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites ($19). We joined Jenner for dinner at her Calabasas home, where she treated us to one of her signature dishes, Grilled Swordfish Steaks with Spicy Tomato Salsa.
Let’s take it back to the beginning. “I used to cook for my sister and me when I was growing up because my mom was always working,” Jenner shared . “I taught myself how to cook a few things that we both really enjoyed.” It wasn’t until Jenner turned 22 and received professional lessons as a wedding gift that her real passion for food and cooking surfaced. “I just fell in love with the whole process, how relaxed it made me feel and how happy it made everyone else when I cooked something that was fun and that they loved to eat,” she says.
Thirty-six years and countless dishes later, Jenner’s first cookbook, In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites, is born. The tome serves as a tribute to all the recipes her family has grown to love: a sweet potato soufflé adored by Kim and Kanye, the banana pancakes cherished by Kylie, the famous pasta primavera beloved by Khloe, guacamole treasured by Kourtney, and a sausage and peppers meal favored by Rob.
As Jenner started making her signature swordfish steaks with spicy tomato salsa, we asked if the recipe had a backstory. “It’s one of the first dishes I learned how to make when it came to fish, and I love a great grilled fish,” she says. “The whole room just smells divine when you make it.” We can attest to that, as well as Jenner’s fully stocked and strategically organized kitchen. Pasta, garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, and a heaping of fresh vegetables are on hand at all times. “I have a lot of people around, so I need enough for an army,” she laughed. A special serrated knife she’s had since her 20s is always accounted for. “It’s my favorite gadget, and I can’t find another one to save my life.”
Before placing the swordfish on the grill, Jenner coats the steaks with a thick marinade of lime juice, soy sauce, mustard, dill, garlic, and pepper, which she points out also pairs well with pork and chicken. To accompany the dish, she prepares her figure-friendly spicy tomato salsa, grilled eggplant, and fusilli pasta with mushrooms.
A do-it-all mom, Jenner is no stranger to fast meals either. When she’s pressed for time, Jenner’s go-to is a 30-minute pasta dish. “I love to make this meal,” she says. “Just boil pasta, throw some chicken breast with butter in tinfoil into the oven until it’s moist and tender, and cook some microwavable peas. Then cut up the chicken and toss it with the pasta, peas, and some Parmesan, it’s great!”
While Jenner takes on the cooking for most of the family get-togethers, this year, she’s hoping to pass the baton of Thanksgiving dinner to her kids. “I might go after Khloe as my first victim,” she tells us. “We all love to cook, but I think Khloe takes it to another level. She really does love all of my recipes and comes up with some of her own. It’s really fun to cook with Khloe, and I hope she will really enjoy doing Thanksgiving as much as I always have.”
At the end of the day, we got back on the topic of her book. Jenner, who keeps a healthy collection of Williams-Sonoma and Rocco DiSpirito cookbooks handy in her kitchen, recalls how fun it was to document all the recipes that her friends and family have loved, saying, “My kids are always asking me how to make this or that as they’ve gotten older, and now I know they’ll always have those recipes long after I’m gone.”
