Before and After: A Celeb Hairstylist's Exotic Rooftop Remodel
To celebrate the launch of her new hair-centric editorial site, Mane Addicts, celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkin (who’s styled the tresses of Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart, and more) decided to kill two birds with one stone. In addition to inviting her nearest and dearest over for an intimate, celebratory gathering, Atkin and her photographer husband Mike Rosenthal used the occasion as an opportunity to makeover their rooftop space. Atkin called in Domaine creative director Mat Sanders and interior designer Brandon Quattrone, both of Consort Design, to transform her ho-hum outdoor space.
“My husband and I travel a lot. Some of our best memories were in Morocco and Greece, so when we talked about creating an intimate environment for guests, it only seemed natural to have that influence,” says Atkin. A number of favorite travel destinations came up in conversation during the design discussions, from Bali to St. Tropez to Acapulco to Greece. “Because they globe-trot so much, the style combinations were endless,” says Sanders. “Eventually we settled on a Mediterranean vibe, but the space speaks overall to the international sensibilities.”
Consort Design shopped various Los Angeles import dealers to create an authentic “exotic” look, and also sourced patterned cement tiles from Granada Tile. To continue that global feel, the designers picked up handmade pillows and throws from Nickey Kehoe. As for Atkin’s favorite element? “I loved the cocktail glasses,” she says. “They were vintage with gold trim—so stunning and a perfect blend with the environment.”
In addition to what they wanted to achieve aesthetically, Atkin and Rosenthal also had functional goals for the outdoor room. “The roof was already divided by a stairwell into two sections, and as Jen and Mike claimed each side for their own, the challenge was to find common ground between their two styles,” says Sanders. “Mike was into a verdant, over-grown look for lounging, and Jen preferred a more tailored space for dining.” To create continuity between the two areas, Consort Design used low-maintenance cacti and grasses of various textures, which could withstand the hot L.A. sun during the couple’s frequent travels. “The Persian rugs, flower arrangements, and plants created such a homey feel,” Atkin says.
Atkin invited a few clients and friends, including Clique Media’s very own co-founders Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr and Byrdie editors Faith Xue and Deven Hopp, as well as a few fashion bloggers and hair and makeup industry influencers like Geri Hirsh, Sascha Breuer, and Christine Symonds. “I wanted to keep it casual because it was my home,” she says. Atkin also teamed up with Samsung to give guests a chance to test out the new Samsung GALAXY Note 4.
Atkin’s top tips for entertaining is to “try to have fun,” she says. To that end, she delegated kitchen duties to chef Jeff Nimer of Haute Chefs LA, who developed a top-notch menu for the evening, including ahi tuna tacos in wonton, autumn arugula salad, wild-caught halibut, grilled hanger steak, herb-roasted baby potatoes, fresh berry tarts, and more. “It’s so easy to get caught up in the role of the hostess that we can miss our own party,” she says. “I think it’s important that once the party starts to let all the little things go and try to enjoy spending time with your guests.”
