Meet Maya Penn, a young entrepreneur who at the age of 14 has already had six years of experience running her own eco-friendly fashion line: Maya's Ideas. Maya has been designing and hand-making clothing and accessories out of organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, and vintage materials like silk and wool. Maya counts Samuel L. Jackson as one of her celebrity clients. But Maya isn't motivated by dollar signs. She donates 10 to 20 percent of her company's profits to philanthropic organizations she admires like Live Thrive Atlanta and the Captain Planet Foundation.
For Maya, her environmental contributions don't stop with her fashion company. At 11 years old, Maya founded her own 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Maya's Ideas for the Planet. One of her many ideas is sending eco-friendly sanitary pads to girls in developing countries.
While Maya clearly loves the planet and gets tremendous joy out of helping others, she is most eager to share the message that everyone, even a 14-year-old, can make a huge impact. Maya has already given three Ted Talks about her causes, and she regularly visits schools to talk about environmental causes. "I think it's really cool that I'm able to help other people," she tells Grist. "It's always been my goal to inspire youth."
