This $10 French Product Will Single-Handedly Hydrate Your Skin This Winter
Wintertime is a notoriously difficult season for your skin—dry, cracked skin and conditions like eczema and psoriasis tend to flourish in the dry weather. While home gadgets like a bedroom humidifier can help combat wintertime dryness, Refinery29 swears by an unassuming French skincare staple: micellar water.
Simply put, micellar water "uses tiny micelles, which are clusters of fatty-acid esters, to dissolve dirt, makeup, and oil on the skin without drying," the publication writes. Unlike water, specifically hot water, which is the number one culprit behind dry skin, micellar water is a "gentle, no-rinse cleanser that wipe[s] away waterproof mascara and dulling dead-cell buildup in one fell swoop."
Micellar water, which originated in 1990s France, was created in response to the country's notoriously hard, mineral-rich tap water, which can wreak havoc on your skin. "Micellar water, then, is not just a luxury—it was developed out of necessity … to help people avoid washing their faces with tap water in the first place," adds the publication. Dermatologist Julie Russak, MD, recommends simply squirting a bit of micellar water onto a cotton ball and wiping it over your skin and eyelids, "no rinsing required."
Topping R29's list of the best micellar water brands is Bioderma's Sensibio H2O Water. "No conversation about micellar water is complete without a mention of this classic standby … which started out as an under-the-radar pick beloved by models and makeup artists," they explain. While Sensibio H2O used to be more difficult to get ahold of, you can now order it from Amazon or find it in Ricky's beauty supply stores. Shop this top wintertime skincare pick below.
