are making a name for themselves creating timeless, relaxed spaces with a slightly modern, and altogether comfortable, edge. "We aim to create warm and calm rooms -- rooms that feel quiet, yet complex," the duo share. For their latest project, they embraced the Mediterranean architecture of their client's home and brought their signature California spin to the interiors. "This home really captures the homeowners' personalities, and their desire to entertain in a casual setting," Dick shares. By embracing a bright, neutral palette punctuated with notes of warmth, the designers created a California-eclectic space perfect for Santa Monica's indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
"Our initial mood board reflected a peaceful palette of neutral colors punctuated by soft grays, burnt oranges, vintage leathers, woven jutes, and warm brass tones," Schrock shares. "The clients requested a masculine look that felt warm, earthy, relaxed, and California modern." A blend of Spanish-influenced furnishings, rugged textures, and brass accents enable this dreamy vision to come to life.
With the direction from their clients for a comfortable modern-masculine look that exemplified California's relaxed lifestyle, the designers sought inspiration from other international aesthetics that embody a similar style. "We were inspired by homes in Mexico, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain where the patios and the living areas really felt connected and read as one area," Dick shares. "In California, we are so lucky to be able to have this idea of inside/outside living, and this home really captures that spirit."
Keeping the airy, open floor plan bright and warm was a key component in DISC's design. "Carrying the same tones in the drapery throughout the first floor helps to make the space feel brighter, lighter, and larger," Dick explains. This tonal linen drapery picks up the airness in the spaces, enabling the designers to draw restrained attention to the home's Mediterranean architecture, specifically the arched windows and doorways. Light rugs provide a similar, yet balanced effect. "Since the wood flooring has beautiful rich tones, we felt we wanted to keep the rugs and other textiles lighter to balance the rooms," the designer notes.
To make the space feel collected as opposed to decorated, the designers encouraged their client to incorporate a variety of styles and textures. "In all of our projects, we stress the importance of vintage elements," Schrock shares. "The mix of time periods in furniture and objects really give a room a sense of presence." Sculptural lighting is equally important and introduced through a variety of custom and catalog fixtures. "We always push our clients to invest in sculptural lighting, as it can bring so much personality and energy to a room, even when not being used as a light source," Dick explains. "The brass dining lighting fixture is hand-wrapped in leather and is the perfect blend of vintage, modern, Spanish, and Californian styles."
A successful blend of modern elements, vintage appeal, masculine detailing, and soft airiness make this space a relaxed retreat for its lucky homeowners. "We love how this space feels super casual, yet refined, and really walks that perfect balance we strive for -- homes that feel together, yet personal, comfortable, and layered," Dick says. We would have to agree.
