Being a mom is a full-time job—one that a study says should earn them $66,000 just for the stress alone—but ask any mother and she’ll tell you it’s also the most rewarding role. Despite the round-the-clock demands of motherhood, more and more women are returning to work or pursuing their own creative paths; in fact, entrepreneurs make up 20% of the 2014 Most Powerful Women’s List, and breadwinning moms are on the rise. According to a new Pew Research Center analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau, mothers are the sole or primary provider in four of 10 households with children, compared to just 11% in 1960. We asked four creative matriarchs about striking it out on their own while managing a family at home, and how they perfect the “juggle.”
