This Is Exactly How Kayla Itsines Became a Morning Workout Person
Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines is somewhat of a cult figure in the fitness world. And it's not difficult to see why: The 25-year-old founded her own fitness company and app roughly eight years ago, amassing some 7 million Instagram followers and 10 million clients during her climb to the top.
Suffice it to say that Itsines has certainly mastered the art of the morning workout—a seemingly mythical feat for the night owls among us (myself included). But if you're looking to change your ways in light of the upcoming summer months, Itsines is offering her expertise to the masses. "Something I regularly get asked about is my morning routine," she writes on her blog. "I'm a real morning person, so getting up early to start my day makes me feel good!" Here's what she suggests for those of us who fall into the night-owl category:
Ease Up on the Snooze Button
"Press snooze once or twice, and it becomes easy to talk yourself out of getting up to workout," she writes. She recommends setting your alarm tone to your favorite song to help you wake up on the right side of the bed, or to do a few morning stretches instead of hitting snooze. I've personally had success with charging my phone across the room so that I physically have to get out of bed to turn my alarm off.
Prep the Night Before
Leaving everything until the morning of will further decrease your chance of making it to the gym. Itsines recommends packing your gym bag and preparing breakfast and lunch the night before to make your mornings as simple as possible. "If possible, allow some natural light in the bedroom to help you wake up!" she adds.
Choose Short, High-Intensity Workouts
If you know you only have to work out for around 30 minutes, Itsines notes it's "easier to clear space in your morning schedule." "I follow the same routines as you guys, using my Sweat With Kayla app," she says, "which means I can do my workouts anywhere." And she means anywhere—most of her workouts don't require a gym or equipment.
