How to Dissolve Your Anxiety ASAP (Without Taking Medicine)
When it comes to anxiety, there's no singular prescription that serves as a cureall for everyone. Many find solace in traditional medications, like those in the family of serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Others, like New York–based personal trainer and yoga instructor Brittany Jackson, have success with holistic practices to keep anxiety at bay.
"I was diagnosed with social anxiety in third grade," writes Jackson for MindBodyGreen, and "20 years later, after what seems like a lifetime of avoiding life, rearranging, and having to ask for special considerations to simply become functional—I have developed a system of coping practices that interrupt anxious thought patterns." Below, read up on the three natural strategies that have helped Jackson cope with her anxiety:
Always prioritize self-care. The anxious mind sends the message that you don't have time to take care of yourself," she writes. "So it's important to slow down and make space for self-care practices at the beginning of your day." For Jackson, that means brushing her teeth, drinking a tall glass of water, and applying moisturizer first thing in the morning.
Express gratitude every day. "The anxious mind focuses on what's missing, what's going wrong, and is constantly trying to generate reasons," she explains. Focusing on the positives in your life and expressing gratitude for them can resettle "that tendency to lean into fear and worry."
Get grounded. If Jackson starts to experience the familiar feeling of anxiety creeping in, she stops whatever she's doing and does one of the four things: step outside, practice aromatherapy, focus on her breath, or work on self-forgiveness. "There will be days when anxiety seems to get the best of us," she concludes. "Forgive yourself and continue to practice leaning into the present one movement and one meditation at a time."
