Why and How You Should Organize Your Sentimental Items
Birthday cards with particularly meaningful messages, concert tickets from your first date with your husband, your kids’ first art projects they bring home from school—all of these mementos and keepsakes have a special place in your heart, but they may be taking over your home. If you don’t take a step back every now and then to reevaluate, your stash of sentimental items may balloon to epic proportions. Enter organization expert Tidy Tova, who is sharing six ways to keep your meaningful items organized and the size of your collection reasonable.
“Think about what you're holding on to. Don't get in the habit of keeping anything and everything sentimental that comes into your life. It's so important to keep these items in check and only hold on to what's meaningful. Ask yourself: Is the item special? Does it make me happy? Am I going to look at in the future? A well-curated collection will be more approachable and enticing to look at when you want to take a trip down memory lane.“
“When determining what to keep, don't get hung up on the decision. You'll know when you feel passionately about something, so keep it limited to those items and purge the rest. Don't hold on to certain belongings because you feel like you need to—generic cards with a scribbled signature and uninspiring drawings get the goodbye!”
“Find a designated sentimental keepsake box and make sure that you store the items inside! Since you won't be referring to the container often, you can place it in deeper storage or a less accessible area.”
“Separate different collections using plastic folders. To keep things organized, separate the ticket stubs from the birthday cards from the meaningful notes. Label each folder so you know what belongs where.”
“Photograph larger, more cumbersome mementos. If you're having a hard time purging trophies, old dolls, or large projects, photograph them and place the photos in a mini album. You can store it alongside your keepsake box so everything is together.”
“Revisit your sentimental keepsake box at least once a year. Take some time to go through the items to ensure they still bring meaning to your life. Don't be afraid to throw away the things that don't feel memorable or special anymore. Remember, you'll be acquiring many more items in the future.”
