The New Baby Name Trend We Did Not See Coming

Kelsey Clark

What inspired us to fill binders with hundreds upon hundreds of playing cards in the 1990s is now spawning a new line of sex toys, changing the way people date, and giving rise to a fresh trend in baby names. Yes, we're talking about Pokémon—more specifically Pokémon Go.

According to BabyCenter, a pregnancy and parenting website that also reports on baby name trends, new parents are actually naming their children after Pokémon characters. BuzzFeed's Mike Spohr reported on the trend, pointing out how names like Eevee, Onyx, Star, Ivy, Roselia, and Ash have experienced an epic resurgence as of late. Many of these names haven't seen a spike in popularity since Pokémon first took the world by storm nearly two decades ago.

“We see babies named after TV show characters, celebrities, and even Instagram filters,” BabyCenter Editor in Chief Linda Murray told BuzzFeed, expressing that she was unsurprised by the trend. “Millennials are particularly attracted to technology and ’90s nostalgia, which is one of the reasons we think Pokémon Go is already having an impact on baby naming trends among pregnant women.”

While we can’t say we’re surprised either, we’re not sure which Pokémon trend has crossed the line the furthest: Pokémon sex toys or Pokémon baby names.
