3 Mistakes You Make the Moment Your Alarm Goes Off

A torrent of tiny decisions contribute to how we feel and perform throughout the day, but according to Business Insider, a few key bad moves in the morning could completely derail the hours that follow. From hitting snooze first thing (you're wrecking your sleep cycle) to quickly scanning your inbox for important messages (experts say it's pointless) these habits might seem harmless, but they could render you tired and unproductive. 

Take note: These bad habits should be eradicated from your a.m. routine.

Hitting Snooze

Before you roll over and absentmindedly hit the snooze button, pause. The day has barely begun, but Sleep expert Timothy Morgenthaler says you're about to make a rookie error. "Most sleep specialists think that snooze alarms are not a good idea," he explains, partly because if you fall into a deep sleep, you'll enter a new cycle you won't be able to finish. In short, you'll feel more tired than if you had woken up when your alarm first sounded.

Checking Email First Thing

It's an easy mistake to make, but Julie Morgenstern, author of the book Never Check Email in the Morning, says once you introduce this habit in your routine, "you'll never recover."

"Those requests and those interruptions and those unexpected surprises and those reminders and problems are endless," she told Huffington Post. Her advice: Wait one hour. "There is very little that cannot wait a minimum of 59 minutes."

Drinking Coffee During Your Commute

It's perfectly fine to reach for a cup of coffee to boost your energy levels, but if you drink it before 9:30 a.m., you're doing your body a disservice. "Your body naturally produces higher amounts of the stress hormone cortisol, which regulates energy, between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m." Business Insider explains. "So for most people, the best time to drink coffee is after 9:30 a.m."

If you introduce caffeine into your diet too early in the morning, your body will adjust by producing less cortisol, "meaning you'll be creating the problem you fear."
