Shop the Room: Balanced Bedroom
It's a memorable day when you find a bedroom that incorporates color (lots of color) while also maintaining tranquility. So when we stumbled upon the Southampton bedroom of swimwear designer Lily Maddock, you can only imagine our excitement at finding such a rare jewel. By working with Kemble Interiors, Lily was able to mix the laid-back vibe of her native Florida with the more formal style of the East Coast. If you're looking for a similarly cool combo in your own boudoir, heed the following advice. If you're unfamiliar with the rule of threes, it's a principle that suggests items are more enjoyable and satisfying when presented in a group of three. Just think of "Go! Fight! Win!", a saying that spontaneously shot out of our mouths when we saw this deluxe bedroom. The rule is in full effect here, as a color palette of three unifies this room; light blue, lavender, and green. The room also incorporates three pattern types; stripe, greek key, and floral. The result is indeed enjoyable and satisfying, proof that this is not a rule to break. Although we are often fans of mismatched nightstands, casually collected bedding, and disparate bedside lamps; there is something quite beautiful in the vertical symmetry shown in this bedroom. By matching the furniture and decor on either side of your bed's center line, a sense of balance and tranquility is gained. Though, don't forget about horizontal symmetry as well. Match your bed's upholstered frame to it's canopy for symmetry that is as successful as a seaside sunrise. When so many rules are in play, don't confuse the situation with lots of clutter. Choose bold statement pieces that can stand strong on their own. In this case, sculptural Artichoke Lamps in a refreshing lavender hue are all that is required. Add in a couple outdoor lanterns, to suggest a cabana feel, and the place is fully accessorized before your head even hits the pillow.
