Could Your iPhone Soon Replace Your Passport?
If you’re human, you’ve probably experienced the last-minute travel panic of realizing either that you don’t know where your passport is or that you don’t know when it expires—not fun. Well, according to Condé Nast Traveler, the paper passport may be going the way of, well, paper everything else.
“De La Rue, the world’s biggest passport producer, is currently working on a ‘paperless passport,’ developing technology that could store passports within mobile phones,” the magazine reports.
While safety concerns regarding forgery are of course at the forefront of any new developments in the space, security companies are already hard at work. According to The Telegraph, the technology required to create truly safe digital, mobile phone passports is still in early stages of development, but researchers are interested.
We see pros and cons to the conversation: streamlined convenience on the one hand, loss of one of the most enjoyable souvenirs of world travel, on the other. Still, we’ll be staying tuned.
Would you give up your paper passport in exchange for a digital alternative? In the meantime, keep what you have in one of these handsome passport holders.
