The Surprising Source of the Latest Trend in Baby Names

The force is strong among new parents. Babycenter is reporting that the latest trend in baby names is inspired by a little movie called Star Wars. The most recent installment of the epic franchise, The Force Awakens, has two characters whose names have quickly rocketed to the top of the list of trending baby names since the film's release in December. Rey, the young female lead played by Daisy Ridley, is the preferred name for newborn girls. Kylo is what parents are calling their newborn boys, for Kylo Ren, Adam Driver’s villainous descendant of Darth Vader. “Rey is a fierce warrior, a Jedi master. If you’re looking for a strong girl’s name that embodies power but still sounds beautiful, you can’t do much better than Rey,” Linda Murray, Babycenter global editor in chief, told Today. “I was surprised by the rise in interest in Kylo because the character Kylo Ren is such a negative force, but some parents may be attracted to the power and the darkness in this name.” The names have spiked in popularity and are currently 82% and 67% on the girls’ and boys’ lists, respectively. We love the name Rey for a girl because it also means "king" in Spanish. What do you think of the names?

Watch the movie The Force Awakens and become familiar with the inspiring characters now.
