This Collection of Photos Showcases What It Means to Be a Strong Girl
Now more than ever it's important that women of all ages and backgrounds feel the potential of their strength and self-worth. As we've seen from the Women's March, International Women's Day, and further efforts, women (and men) can successfully come together to champion the strength of the female community. By supporting one another, we can take a stand for the freedom to cultivate our own identities and carve out our place in the world. Standing together and lending this support is especially important for younger generations of women and young girls who are still finding their voice and learning who they are.
In a new book showcasing a collection of moving photos of young women demonstrating their strength in a diversity of ways, Kate T. Parker shows young girls that their passion and strength are what make them beautiful. Titled Strong Is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves, the book features portraits of young girls fighting cancer, female football players, ballet dancers, and brave young women standing up to bullies in the lunchroom.
"Strong, to me, is facing something that scares you and doing it anyway," says Parker, who was inspired by the strength she saw in her own daughters. "Courage isn't the absence of fear. It is being afraid and doing it anyway." The touching collection of photographs was released earlier this month. See below for some highlights from the book.
