TripAdvisor's #1 Hotel in the World Is Magnificent and Imposing
Umaid Bhawan Palace—a hotel in Jodhpur, a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan known for its skyline of varying shades of cerulean edifices—has taken the No. 1 spot in TripAdvisor's Traveler’s Choice Awards.
The palace, which still serves as the main home to the maharaja of Jodhpur and his family, includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a jaw-dropping spa, marbled squash courts, 347 rooms (64 of which comprise the hotel premises), and a museum.
Perched high above the city and set amid 26 acres of lush gardens, the Art Deco–inspired structure, built between 1928 and 1943, is magnificent (and also rather imposing). Its design, helmed by Edwardian architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester, blends Eastern and Western architectural influences.
According to Taj Hotels, Umaid Bhawan stands as "the last of the great palaces of India and one of the largest private residences in the world." For anyone who dreams of vacationing like royalty, we think this is simply a no-brainer.
